Who We Are - Our Mission

The Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless (AACH) provides a foundation for women and families to rebuild their lives.

These are the people in your neighborhood.

Nearly 1,000 people in Alexandria and Arlington are homeless. They are among the most vulnerable people in our community. Many are single women struggling to keep their children safe and healthy. Nearly one third are the children themselves.

They face a significant challenge.

Not only must they earn sufficient income to afford housing and basic life necessities in one of the most expensive regions in the nation, they often must do so while battling a host of other problems, such as abuse or addiction and a lack of education.

Too often, they face these challenges alone.

They need a long-term solution.

One-off assistance from food pantries or overnight shelters provides important, but temporary, relief. It cannot take the place of a long-term, sustainable solution: giving these women and families the tools they need to become self-sufficient.

AACH provides the foundation.

Through a combination of programs working in concert, AACH provides a foundation for women and families to rebuild their lives.

AACH’s focus is on providing the tools that allow women and families to help themselves: to give them a fresh start in housing, training and employment. To teach them to be better parents. To stabilize the home lives of the children.

To help them make what often seems to them to be an impossible journey to independence.

Success Stories

When I first became a client of the program, I was straight out of the shelter for the homeless and pretty much still homeless. Battling with cancer, with a two-year-old baby and a twelve-year-old child, I didn’t know where our next roof would be. AACH saved our lives. I don’t know where I would be today were it not for them.
